Vacuum handling is a frequently used technology in various industry sectors to produce material flow.For that reason it is important to inquire the energy efficiency of vacuum handling systems to realize energy efficient and sustainable automation solutions. This paper gives an overview of vacuum handling technology and defines standard handling procedures that are examined in the second part.Focus is on the power consumption of typical industrial handling robots and the vacuum grippers for particular handling tasks. Therefor the setup of measurement had to be designed and the hardware of the gripper had to be realized and measured. It turns out that the power consumption of vacuum grippers isstrongly dependent on the handling process and can have a huge share on the total power consumption of a handling system.
