Socio-technical transition in the electric lighting industry: a multi-level perspective model

Electric lighting technology has been assuming an important role in both contemporary industry and civilization, with more than 130 years history. Despite its long history and huge industrial economic value, which accounted for €69 billion in 2010, there has been only one significant socio-technical transition in the lighting industry among three radical innovative technologies. This paper analyzes the socio-technical transition in the electric lighting industry according to transition theory. The crucial and empirical elements of multi-level perspective (MLP) are summarized, and the socio-technical transition is investigated by content analysis based on the MLP model. The results show that the path of the socio-technical transition of electric lighting has a similar trajectory to MLP theory, and the transition is the result of mutual dynamic interaction among many elements of the niche, socio-technical regime, and landscape level of MLP. In the niche level, the sequence of the events is establishing market niche, price-performance improvement, learning process, and finally, support from powerful groups. In the socio-technical regime level, change in social network, change in technology, and change in rules took place in order. In the landscape level, macro political development, macro-economic trends and socio-economic trends happened consecutively. The result of this study can be a basis for forthcoming research about the second socio-technical transition and empirical study.
