Traditionally, head anthropometric data are obtained by using two-dimension (2D) direct measurement approaches. However, the 2D data cannot describe the complex three-dimension (3D) shapes and surface characteristics clearly. With the development of optoelectronic technology, using scanning system to construct the 3D head models and to classify head shapes is the feasible approach. This paper used the 3D scanning method to collect head anthropometry data of 300 Taiwanese males with age ranging from 18 to 30 years old. Based on these data, principal component analysis (PCA) was conducted to obtain some major variables of describing head shapes. The feature variables of representing head characteristics included: head length, head height and head breadth. Cluster analysis was performed to identify four head shapes including: short-shallow-wide, short-shallow-narrow, long-deep-wide and long-deep-narrow. Moreover, the average cumulative percentage variance explained was higher than 80%. These results can provide very useful information for designing and manufacturing head related products.
