In product life cycle management, maintenance is always an important part of business strategy. In recent years, Information Communication Technologies (ICT) has been developed rapidly, and the e-maintenance field is growing fast. In addition, the augmented reality (AR) is an emerging technology for visualization. There are many applications and researches going on. Augmented reality technology provides users with genuine experience through a user-friendly and intuitive display. This study proposes an AR Automobile Maintenance Expert System (AR-AMES) based on the concept of service-oriented architecture. The AR-AMES involves two main parts, the automobile maintenance expert system, and 3D resources access system. The AR-AMES—which includes knowledge base, inference engine, and expert system interface—provides different solutions for users while facing different maintenance situations. When using the AR-AMES, the users can easily interact with the 3D models via the 3D resources access system, which is adopted by web services. By operating the AR-AMES, users can acquire the maintenance techniques by the display of 3D models, and then perform complicated maintenance tasks. In the experiment evaluation, 10 male participants were involved. Their age ranged from 25 to 28 years, and must have sufficient driving experience. After operating AR-AMES, participants were asked to conduct two subjective assessments, i.e. SUS (System Usability Scale) and QUIS (Questionnaire for User Interaction Satisfaction). The result shows that the scores in “Learnability,” “Effectiveness,” and “Satisfaction” are high, thus it can be seen that the AR maintenance system is promising and acceptable. The AR-AMES can help customers to perform DIY maintenance, and can help businesses to provide an effective service in the future.
