Recently, studies on gesture interfaces have significantly increased. Especially in the field of ergonomics, there are many studies about designing gesture commands in which user needs are reflected. Prior to this, the situations in which users need gesture interfaces should be identified. The objective of this study is to investigate user needs of three-dimensional gesture interfaces in daily life. A total of 20 persons (mean age: 35.3 years, 9 males and 11 females) participated in diary technique, and a total of 20 persons (mean age: 28.1, 9 males and 11 females) participated in focus group interview (FGI). Diaries were written for their needs of gesture interfaces based on five W’s and one H during oneweek, and three focus group (students, housewives, and office workers) with 6 or 7 personsparticipated in the FGI. As a result, a total of 533 diaries were collected, and 105 user needs from FGI were collected. We collected and analysedthe user needs for three-dimensional gesture interfaces in daily life by using two types of survey method and compared the two methods. The results will providevaluable data for gesture interface designers.
