A spreadsheet-based system has been developed to tackle a seminar allocation problem with rotations. The third-year students in author’s department experience three laboratories in a semester. The semester is divided into three periods and the students are assigned to a different laboratory in each period. The assignment takes into account capacities of laboratories and the rate of assigned students to a laboratory against its capacity, as well as students’ preferences. Traditionally, the assignment planning was executed manually and it took over approximately five hours. In this research, the target assignment problem is formulated as a mixed integer programming and is solved by a developed spreadsheet-based system. Users input required data to the spreadsheet software and can derive an optimal solution for the assignment problem solved by commercial optimization solver software. The developed system shortens the operation time for the assignment task and correspond unexpected change of input data.
