Napthalene is one of the Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons (PAHs), found in petroleum, coal and other natural products. Although it is nonxenobiotic, it could cause a serious problem when it is improperly used and handled. It is considered as a mutagenic compoundd. as a hydrophobic compound, PAHs (napthalene) will be sorpted in organic matter. Sorption is often well corellated with soil organic matter content and PAHs hidrophobicity and significantly reduces biodegradabillity. This study is primaly concerned with the investigation of soil organic matter's role in the napthalene biodegradation. Pseudomonas NY-1 was iasolated from treatment oil unit, Pertamina Cilacap. For this purpose, Vertisol, organic matter reduced Vertisol, and sandy oil were used. The soil water content was kept at 60% Water Holding Capacity (WHC) and the ratio of Carbon: Nitrogen: Phosphor (CNP) were 100:10:1. Naphtalene was added to the soil at the concentration of 1813 ppm. The culture was incubated in the dark for about 28 days. Parametersexamined were: 1)CO2 production, which was detected through the reaction of CO2 and NaOH, 2) thhe viable cells which was measured by drop plate method, 3) The naphtalene residues was analyzed by GC, and 4) the organic matter level, was measured by dichromate reduction method. The result showed that naphthalene biodegradation in Vertisol soil accurs rapidly in the first 3,5 days after inoculation. The amount of naphthalene biodegraded in Vertisol was 823,1 ppm (91,5). Whereas those in organic matter-reduced Vertisol was 483,9 ppm (52,7). there was positive assosiation bwtween organic matter and the activity and growth of Pseudomonas NY-1 and also biodegradation of naphthalene.
