Isi artikel
This article reports on research in progress into the discourse of science reports. The problem currently being investigated and dealt with below is that of “referential fuzziness,” i.e., identifying who is speaking to whom and who is saying what when end eavours are communicated and reported on in scholarly and popular journals. The introductory section of this contribution deals with participants in and features of a communicative situation and their relations to the object of study. The following three sections describe the problem, the data, and certain characteristics of scientific communication that bear upon data analysis. The data analysis section exemplifies, through the analysis of a “popular” text, how a study of indexical markers may help to solve the problem under study, while the formal section comments upon the results obtained.
