This study seeks to determine the average American's attitude toward faultless English spoken with a foreign accent. The results seem to indicate that the attitude is negative and that it influences not only the listener's reaction to t h e a c c e n t but to the speaker's general abillties as well. A major point of interest IS the possible link between t h i s attitude and the unpop ularity of foreign language study in the United States.
