It has been claimed that generative phonology will effect major changes in the pronunciation sections of foreign language textbooks. However, being highly mentalistic, complex, antibehavioristic, computer-like, and abstract, generative phonology can be practically applied to teaching second language pronunciation in only a very limited way.
