The MAT program offered by the School for International Training in Brattleboro, Vermont, represents a unique approach to preparing language teachers. Having assembled a group of dedicated arid qualified degree candidates, the program allows them to pursue specific interests in the field of language education, and requires that each be responsible for developing and implementing a personal philosophy of teaching. Candidates share their ideas and insights with each other as various fields essential to effective teaching (psychology, linguistics, etc.) are examined. Orientation is pragmatic; a sizable portion of the year is devoted to practice teaching in a foreign environment. A descriptive chronology of the 1970-71 program indicates that the candidates grew and developed considerably in skill and understanding during the course of the year.
