A survey of the language courses taken in high school by National Merit Semifinalists indicates that French and Latin are the languages most frequently studied by these talented students. A majority of students studied more than one language and generally studied these for more than two years The “brighter” the student, the more languages and number of years studied. The higher the academic quality of the high school, the more languages studied and these for a greater length of time. Girls study more years of languages and a greater number of different languages than do boys.
