Isi artikelThere is a valid need for individualized instruction in advanced language classes where students represent a wide range of ability levels. To meet this need a point system was introduced in two advanced courses in Spanish: Conversation and Composition, and Advanced Grammar and Stylistics. While quizzes, exams, and class participation were graded traditionally, written and oral assignments were judged on their potential maximum point value. Students who were weak in written or spoken Spanish at the beginning of the semester could compensate by doing extra work, thus gaining additional points. Students who could handle simple assignments with ease could contract to do more sophisticated projects-poems, short stories, skits, dialogues, etc.--with a proportionately greater point value. Student evaluations completed at mid-semester and the end of the semester revealed enthusiasm for the approach and a general feeling that all students had been given an opportunity toimprove their language skills.
