Isi artikel
Written from the standpoint that foreign language education is both practically possible and of great importance for humanity, the article begins by making a distinction between three states of professional development: from instructor to teacher to educator. Next the paper discusses three types of change which currently affect language teachers: changed social needs and educational functions of foreign languages, changed expectations and attitudes on the part of students, changes of approach and methods. I t is suggested that through a model of the language learning/teaching process the teacher can find illumination. After discussion of the elements of such a model, the author summarizes the requirements for optimum success : willing learners, skilled and cherishing teachers, a community that gives moral and administrative support, and a profession whose support includes disciplinary contributions and suitable training. These requirements provide the link between the classroom and the world.
