An SSR or Sustained Silent Reading program provides a way to upgrade reading instruction by stressing self-selection, independ e n t p r a c t i c e , and t h e use of reading as a communication tool. In this a r t i c l e , general guidelines a r e offered f o r s e t t i n g up, implementing, and e v a l u a t i n g SSR programs; specific recommenaations a r e made for building an SSR resource l i b r a r y , scheduling SSR periods, and i n t e g r a t i n g SSR p r a c t i c e with other language skill-development activities.
