Poetry, largely because of its concentrated form and language, frequently gives students the impression of being a mystery. Long before they encounter it in foreign language study, many have come to regard it with suspicion in their native tongue. For that reason, foreign language teachers need a reservoir of techniques designed to dispel misconceptions students may have about poetry and to lead them step-by-step into its study. 1 his article presents learning experiences of such a nature and illustrates how teachers can devise other activities that help prepare students to meet poetry on its own terms.
