Factors contributing to the develop ment of successful early childhood foreign language programs are considered within a specific context. Included are discussions of grouping strategies based on size and flexibility, and examination of curriculum design based on learned native language patterns, hierarchies of language learning experiences, variety of instructional activities, affective learning processes, adaptation of commercial and other prepared foreign language materials, and repetition of foreign language patterns within varied personalized environments. Sample learning experiences illustrate implementation of the various components and indicate a rationale for observed outcomes.
