Isi artikel
The foreign language field is experiencing a renewed interest in culture and civilization. Language competence and a mere acquaintance with literature are no longer the only desired goals of future foreign language teachers. Culture and civilization meaningfully taught to students at all levels do not only enhance the study of foreign languages but become an important factor of attraction. Careful consideration must be given to three prerequisites for good instruction in culture and civilization: highly competent teachers, either natives or those thoroughly familiar through travel and experience with the native culture; appropriate audiovisual materials; and provisions for exposing students to specific cultural experiences. The strong desire on the part of the future language teacher to be well informed is the ultimate reason for the very existence of culture courses in every foreign language curriculum. This article seeks to examine and reassess the influence of the close relationships of language to social patterns of behavior and the thought processes that influence these patterns. It will provide the rationale for cultural instructions, an overview of the educational needs of language students, and implementation suggestions including a syllabus that can be used in teaching students about German culture.
