Isi artikelThe authors developed an evaluation design to determine the French surface culture content and its manner of presentation in the first-year college French textbook. This instrument was then applied to [he first-year college French textbooks published between 1972 and 1978. The surface culture part of the design was developed from the ten cultural categories of Edward T. Hall’s Map of Culture, the institutional ategories of Nostrand’s Emergent Model, and Pfister and Borzilleri’s five general surface culture categories The second part, the pedagogical design, was adapted from Pfister and Borzilleri. Of the twenty-one textbooks evaluated, only two were considered adequate in French surface culture content and in manner of presentation of surface culture. The implication is that firstyear college French students are not fully learning the language they are studying since they are lacking the cultural values and meanings by which the language is defined.
