Isi artikelThe problem of passive voice is really an interesting issue in academic writing. This paper tries to investigate the students’ problems in passive voice constructions found in their scientific papers from the linguistic perspective. This study reveals that the students’ ungrammatical or improper passive sentences, in their scientific papers, contain two major problems. First, looking at forms of the sentences the first problems of their passive are related with the grammaticality of the sentences which involve the ‘to be’, the subject, and verb forms, while the second, looking at the functions, the problems of the passive constructions are related with the overuse of passive which covers wordiness, directness, coherence, and clarity of the sentences. Knowing the passive problems, this paper also tries to provide the possible solutions for the problems. Finally, this paper also presents the conditions where passive constructions are appropriately used.
