No comprehensive studies have been conducted to examine the phenomenon of the school examination since it began to be implemented, in particular English writing test. In fact, the role of such a school based assessment has been increasingly important according to Government Regulation No. 32/2015 (as the replacement of PP No 19/2005). This study has an objective, namely, to describe the implementation of the English writing test in the context of the school examination in the upper secondary schools. Mixed methods are used as the research design in this study. The population includes as many as 43 upper secondary schools. By using stratified random sampling method, there are 1 public school and 2 private schools for low achievement category; 1 public school and 6 private schools for medium achievement category, and 3 public schools and 9 private schools for high achievement category. The checklist is a data collection instrument to obtain quantitative data. This study finds that the practices of the writing test in the context of the school examination has resulted in different patterns of the implementation. The schools are still dominantly clustered into both partial and very partial implementation categories. There is strong tendency for partial implementation of the policy on the writing test in the school examination’s context.
