Isi artikelFirst language believed gives effect to students’ second language learning (Lado in Saville- Troike, 2006). Sounds from their first language will give interference to the sounds production of the second language they are learning. The interference occurs because of the students’ first language which is fossilized (Selinker in Acton,1984). This study is investigating the consonants sounds production of the 22 EFL teacher students in Banten province in Indonesia. As they are teacher candidates, they are expected to be model for their students. These students bring two languages (vernacular language (Sundanese Banten Dialect or Javanese Banten Dialect) and Indonesian Language) to English class. Thus it is believed that the students’ former languages will be the barrier to their English sounds production. Questionnaire and observation are administered as research instruments in this qualitative study. Questionnaire is spread out to find out the problematic English consonants and when they encounter consonant sounds production. The observation is recorded in the classroom when the students are doing teaching practice; it is done to investigate the production of the English consonants. Miles and Hubermann’s matrix (1994) is used to analyze the data. The research answers the questions: (1) what are students’ problematic consonants sounds? (2) When do the students encounter consonant sounds production problems, specifically individual consonant sounds or in combination consonant sounds? The finding is expected to be beneficial to English teachers especially in Banten province that they find appropriate techniques to teaching pronunciation.
