Th e American Translators Association (ATA) had its twenty-first anniversary this year. The first meeting was inspired by Alexander Gode. The Association, which now has 1500 members, presents a medal in his name once a year for outstanding achievements in language. The aims of the A TA are tb achieve ever higher standards, to improve conditions and payment.for translators, and to gain the respect merited for the translating profession. It publishes the ATA Chronicle throughout the year, and a Professional Services Directory. Members who have attended meetings of the President’s Commission on Foreign Language and International Studies urged better training for translators in the United States.
