This article briefly traces the history of the National Standards for Foreign languages and then addresses who is using the standards. The Center for Applied Linguistics reports that approximately half of the surveyed foreign language teachers are aware of national or state standards. Finally, the issue of how states are developing foreign language standards is addressed by examining the curricula of Minnesota, New Jersey, and Connecticut. Recommendations follow as to how a state’s curriculum can be aligned with the national standards
