In response to theoretical developments in literary and cultural studies, many arguments have been made for revising foreign language curricula in recent years. However, a number of practical questions remain, particularly in the upper division, regarding (a) appropriate content and (6) the relationship between content and language instruction. The author discusses a third-year level course on postwar German culture in terms of the combined goals of increasing students’ cultural knowledge, critical reading skills, and linguistic fluency. Such a course provides a possible template for language programs working toward an integrated curriculum.
