Isi artikel
This article is a report on an experimental study of phonetic symbolism in some common vocabulary of Japanese and Ponapean. Subjects unfamiliar with these languages were asked to distinguish paired antonyms on the basis of sound in a taped presentation. As predicted, the subjects were better able to do this for Ponapean, a largely nonliterate language, than for Japanese, which has a long tradition of literacy in the indigenous syllabary.
