Isi artikel
Reexamination of the case of Victor of Aveyron in light of recent cases of speechlessness or speech deprivation shows that linguistic acquisition is adversely affected by poor nutrition, absence of sensory stimulation, and lack of contact with any social environment. Children experiencing varying degrees of such deprivation evidence a number of linguistic and sociolinguistic deficits which are difficult to eradicate. These include an inability to attend to speech unless they are directly addressed, inappropiate control of voice pitch and intonation, lack of understanding of relational linguistic material as well as little or no knowledge of sociolinguistic rules, governing conversational turn-taking and interpersonal feedback.
