Isi artikel
Two simple sentences may be conjoined in English by means of some conjunction in one of the possible slots; clause order, intonation and other features of signal are involved also. From such signals arise various sorts of meaning: lexical , stylistic, contextual and logical. But all such meaning arises from physical signals in the construction. It is not that the sentence maker must express some meaning already inherent in the sentences to be joined; he does not reflect meaning through his choice of signals, but rather imposes it. A clear understanding of this point makes a thorough analysis of conjoining possible in the first place; it also suggests principles important to a philosophy of language.
