Isi artikelThis paper is a short review of some of the studies in cognitive electrophysiology which have been carried out in brain-damaged aphasic subjects and points out, from the standpoint of neuropsychological investigation, some areas worthy of closer study in the future. Specifically, five groups of studies are under review; namely, (1) EEG studies in aphasia, (2) EP (evoked potentials) studies in aphasia, which are expected to account for both linguistic and anatomical determinants, (3) related studies using VEP (visual evoked potentials), (4) the CNV in aphasia, and (5) inferences from neuropsychological studies in which are listed four areas worthy of closer study in the future. That is, (i) the suggestion of semantic processing being more bilaterally distributed than phonological processing, (ii) the role of the right hemisphere in aphasia symptomatology and recovery, (iii) the need to take into consideration age effects in EP studies, not just in children but throughout the lifespan, and (iv) the question of the neurophysiological correlates of hallucinatory and other image experiences, study of the late components of the EP in amnestic (Korsakoff) states, EP studes of attentional phenomena in confusional states, and habituation studies linked to various types (semantic, phonological) of stimulus satiation.
