Isi artikelThe frequent attempts of linguists to construct unified models of language have been made more difficult by different modalities of categorization to be found in the phenomena of language. In many well documented cases language is best described by means of discrete categories, while in other instances continual categorization is more appropriate. A model is proposed that can operate in either mode, depending on how its elements are configured. A unified network model is outlined that contains discrete sub-components and continual sub-components, the two types being interlocked in a single structure. This model is found to have advantages in its ability to provide extended coverage of semantic phenomena and to provide a natural explanation for grammatical phenomena
