This paper presents a conceptual model of certain of the processes possibly underlying word-selection. The model provides the basis of a mathematical expression, from which it is shown that the total vocabulary available in English, as estimated by the word-count in the Oxford English Dictionary, can be calculated with an accuracy of 4.339&-0.7%.
