Isi artikelLanguage is a highly structured system with two functions: communication and signification. The signification function is recognized by all theories of language, even if only by the inclusion of some kind of “lexicon” in the descriptive model. This paper argues that communication is the primary function of language and that the signification function can be derived from it. Several theories of language (stratificationalism, Tagmemics, Bloomfieldian structuralism, and Chomskyan structuralism) are scrutinized for their attitude toward the communication function. The contributions made by stratificationalism and Tagmemics which can be attributed to their attention to the communication function are outlined. Some consequences of ignoring communication are outlined with respect to the Bloomfieldian and Chomskyan schools. The consequences of one of Chomsky’s anti-communicative postulates are considered in some detail. They are shown to render his theory empty. suggesting that the postulate be abandoned.
