Isi artikel
This paper seeks to provide an introduction to some linguistic features of adolescenttherapist conversation. The focus is mainly on those characteristics of adolescent speech which may appear during therapy: problems of suitable explanation of feeling-states owing to lack of linguistic (semantic) elaboration, association of therapy with just an extension of ‘school’ and with the transfer of ‘school’ language behaviour, ‘powerful focus on questioning, adolescent narrative and telling lies. Adolescent ways of thinking are reflected in ways of talking. Verbal displays of self-reference, egocentric opinion, the use of taboo or sexual language reflect insecurities and fears. The roles which the adolescent must play in various speech domains of home, school, club, etc. require a wide repertoire of language skills. However, the adolescent is a linguistic apprentice who may be a faulty interactant with other people simply because of a lack of appropriate skills. The psychotherapist may be able to assist in the acquisition of such social skills. Awareness by the therapist of the various linguistic characteristics of interaction during therapy must be part of the therapist/ psychiatrist’s repertoire of professional skills.
