Isi artikelThere is some uncertainty as to the proper carrier unit of word stress. Whereas the early generativists assigned stress to the vowel, there is a long tradition of associating it with the syllable. The speech error data examined in this article demonstrate that both *views, contradictory as they might appear, are to a certain extent correct. It is shown that while vowels are basically independent of stress, they are more sensitive to stress than consonants. This ambiguity in the data poses a serious problem at the conceptual level. It is found difficult toaccommodate the empirical findings within the apparatus of theoretical linguistics. However, the problem can be overcome if linguistic constructs are combined with psycholinguistic processing assumptions. With the postulation of stronger activation flow between syllables and V-units and weaker activation flow between syllables and C-units, it is possible not only to unambiguously associate stress with the syilabfe but also to explain the differential sensitivity of consonants and vowels to stress.
