Isi artikelData from the present study suggest that sociolinguistic knowledge is realized from the beginning of language use. Nine children (I;0 to 3;s) were videotaped negotiating with parents and an adult unfamiliar to the child. Extensive style-switching was observed in all subjects, with especially interesting shifts taking place in the language of the five youngest subjects. Characteristics of this very early switching make it appear that Searlian knowledge of rights is acquired before Labovian knowledge of community- wide rules for language use. The first syntactic switching appeared either simultaneous with or prior to the relevant syntactic structure, depending upon its status as a formulaic utterance. The roles of formulaic language and of interactional consequences are discussed as explanations for the acquisition of style-switching (styleswitching, negotiation, sociolinguistic norms, acquisition of discourse).
