As IS the case with the deletton of other sentence elements m Classical Arabic, object deletion is semantically marked on two levels: (I) dropping the object deliberately but functionally, (II) emptying the object slot and focusing on the verbal actton. Among the functions of object deletion on the first level are: (a) brevity, (b) degradation or Insult. (c) generalization, (d) ruling out a misleading interpretatton which the presence of the object mtght cause. The second level of object deletion stresses the verbal action. In the latter, the object IS not intended and the transitive verb acts as intransitive.
