Isi artikelA cognitive systems approach of linguistic knowledge is outlined. According to this view, linguistic knowledge or cognitive grammar is part of the coherent structure and function of a cognitive system which is able to process language. Cognitive grammar consists of sensorimotor, syntactic, semantic and pragmatic components. The sensori-motor components serve for sources of knowledge for the linguistic interaction with the environment by means of listening, reading, speaking and writing. The syntactic component brings together the various parts of the linguistic text which is to be processed The semantic component consists of three parts which are specifically intertwined with world knowledge, namely conceptual, referential, and sense semantics. The pragmatic component relates the linguistic knowledge of one language processor to his or her communication partners. The sensori-motor, syntactic, semantic and pragmatic components of cognitive grammar are modular, but highly interactive parts of the language processing system.
