Isi artikel
This paper reports on the results of an empirical study of the discourse functions of personal reference in Dutch and Italian business discourse. Findings from the qualitative and quantitative analysis of four authentic meetings (two in each language) are compared and contrasted on the understanding that through the choice of personal pronouns and other forms of address interactants define their own roles as speakers and the roles of the addressees. The focus of this study is threefold: a) the mapping of the semantic shift that occurs in the non-prototypical use of personal pronouns; b) the pragmatic significance of such shift, particularly considering the strategic use of language in business settings; and c) the contextual factors behind pronominal choices and personal address forms, e.g.. first name and surname. In the light of c) above, the paper also argues that the use of inclusive pronouns in business discourse may not necessarily, or only, be motivated by politeness.
