Isi artikelThe study of personal address has always been an extremely popular topic within sociolinguistics. The purpose of this paper is not to deny the importance of this type of research into hearer-reference, but rather to show that a sociopragmatic approach may shed interesting new light on address behavior in general, and on the use of forms of address in spoken French and Dutch in particular. The term form of address is used in a broad sense, so as to encompass not only T and V (the second-person singular pronouns) and FN/TLN (first name / title plus last name), but also various other devices that can be employed for making reference to the addressee (indefinite pronouns, first-person plural pronouns, offensive and endearment terms, agentless passives, etc).
