In his 1981 paper, Claude Rivi~re raised some problems concerning epistemic must and should in English. Though largely ignored in subsequent work, the data he discussed seems to indicate that epistemic modality is a more complex area than has generally been assumed. It is argued here that the solution he proposed is not workable, and that a better solution seems to emerge from some recent work on French modals by Patrick Dendale. The analysis offered here for English, however, casts doubt on Dendale's treatment of French. Data from the INTERSECT corpus, a collection of French-English parallel texts, suggests that there are further problems in this area.
