Isi artikelIn most semantic studies of the progressive, a mapping is tacitly assumed from the form be + Ving (the present participle of V) to the semantic notion which it realises. Since there is one form, there is one sort of progressive aspect: viewing the development of an event as a state. Romance languages differ from English in that they express two distinct progressive perspectives. The sequence estar + gerund realises the notion of progressive state of an event. The sequences ir + gerund of Spanish and anar + gerund in Catalan realise a dynamic progressive perspective, i.e. the development of an event is viewed as moving, progressing. In the formal analysis proposed the essential distinction between the two is the nature of the period of time of which the development of an event is predicated. The stative progressive is predicated of an undivided (homogenous) period of time, whereas the dynamic progressive is predicated of a period of time divided into consecutive phases.
