Isi artikelBound utterances are stereotypical utterances which are automatically evoked by certain speech situations. Bound utterances are semantically compositional, and they do not differ syntactically and morphologically from free utterances, but their contextual meaning is determined by the speech situation they are associated with, the understanding of their function requires a frame semantic-type account. Traditionally, frame semantics has mainly been used to describe word meanings. In the present paper frame semantics is used in order to account for bound utterances. Bound utterances are claimed to be associated with subevents of a frame. The term script is used to denote the sequences of subevents of a frame. In the simplest case a script consists of linearly ordered subevents, scripts associated with more complex frames may have more complex structures with several ramifications. Since the use of a bound utterance cannot be predicted on the basis of its semantics, bound utterances must be listed in the lexicon in the same way as words are. It can also be shown that bound utterances are in many respects word-like which constitutes a further argument for their listedness
