Isi artikelThis study sets the parameters for the language planning response to Lau us. Nichols. The study examines seminal studies in sociolinguistics and bilingualism as appropriate bases for the re- sponse; principally the UNESCO report, ‘The Use of Vernacular Languages in Education,’ and the research of W. E. Lambert and his associates. The study synthesizes the findings, resolving appar- ent contradictions by means of certain intervening social- psychological variables. This synthesis is applied to a model constructed from Fishman’s summary of world-wide policy re- sponses to bilingualism and bi-dialectal education. This socio- linguistic synthesis is related to political alternatives available for the implementation of the planning. From this, the study demon- strates possible alternative responses to Lau us. Nichols. The study defines and evaluates each response and concludes in favor of a pluralistic response with its ‘bargaining’ consequence.
