Isi artikel[In Hawaiian all syllables are open; in Japanese most syllables are open, but the definition of "open" must be somewhat revised. English with its great number of closed (and "doubly closed") syllables has given the great majority of outside words to both languages in modern times. This paper examines these loan words1 and suggests a connection between vocalic caducity in Hawaiian and Japanese and the epenthetic and paragogic vowels chosen by those languages to "open" syllables which are closed in English. The differences between eye and ear borrowings as well as between the spheres from which the words are borrowed by the two languages are emphasized.]
