In this study, a case of a supermarket, which is located in an aging local city of Japan, is addressed. Our purpose is to prove the effect of the previously done empirical sale strategies, and to extract the information which can be the guidance of the future sales strategy, by analyzing the customer’s purchasing behavior using ID-POS data. The period of analysis is 242 days from October 1, 2012 to May 31, 2013. The target products are 54,386, which we decided to classify in 31 categories. From the ID-POS data, we take out the following items as the customer characteristic: the age (“60s or older”, “50s” and “40s or younger”), the purchasing day (day of the week i.e. weekday, holiday or special sales day on Tuesday), the rank of the customers (customer ranked by the purchased amount) and the eating habits pattern (“fish group” and “meat group”). After examining the ID-POS data using the correspondence analysis, we have determined the age, the day of the week and the eating habits pattern as the characteristics which affect the pattern of customers’ purchasing behavior (distribution of the number of the products purchased). In addition, our study have shown the following aspects of customers’ purchasing behavior from the products categories perspective: foodstuff necessities, mainly fresh foods, are tend to be purchased on the special sales day, “the products which one wants at that moment” on the holidays and weekdays, while some products categories are not much affected by the purchasing day
