Over the last few decades, material requirement planning (MRP)-based production management systems have been extensively used by manufacturing companies. However, the capacity of manufacturing resources is not considered in MRP, which generally assumes fixed lead-time. Consequently, the application of the resulting production plans from MRP systems is limited. On the other hand, advanced planning and scheduling (APS) systems, an alternative to the MRP-based approach, effectively tackle the limited capacity of manufacturing resources, as well as other manufacturing constraints. Thus, an APS system is able to establish a resource plan as well as a capacity plan that conforms to the actual manufacturing environment. In addition, the APS system provides a useful integrated production plan, considering the various dynamic requirements. This paper presents a case study on the introduction of an APS system in a manufacturing company that has trouble creating an effective production plan, even though it is equipped with an MRP-based enterprise resource planning (ERP) system. The case study includes the process by which the master data model is built and the data is collected and analyzed in an actual production environment. In addition, an overall process for the standardization and modularization of data is also presented. Finally, the effectiveness of the introduced APS system is evaluated from the viewpoint of tardiness. As a result, this study shows the benefits of introducing an APS system that enables manufacturing companies to efficiently manage production
