Isi artikelIn Tata Steel (TSL), Oxygen is used in Blast furnaces to reduce coke rate and increase the productivity and is used in LD shops for decarburization and conversion of hot metal into liquid steel. Oxygen flow network has become complex gradually as Oxygen plants of different capacities and pressures and also different facilities at TSL have been added over the years during the various phases of expansion. The annualized demand of oxygen (approx. 18 lacs tons) poses a challenge of channelizing the oxygen supply in the network to ensure smooth supply and also to optimize cost. The bottom-line impact of reducing Oxygen cost by the FY’14 targeted oxygen consumption amount leads to the savings of more than Rs. 10 Crores. Therefore with this objective, a cross-functional team of experts was formed. To attain this goal, a linear programming based optimization model was built, which incorporated all the constraints involved in the long term agreement (LTA) signed between Tata Steel and its strategic partners and also according to LTA, dynamicity involved in Oxygen Flow network due to any unforeseen interruptions from the supplier or user end were also added in the model. Model was validated using past oxygen consumption data (July 13 to Dec 13) and savings of more than Rs. 3 Crs were estimated excluding savings on MTOP penalties. Since Jan 14, oxygen requirement of Tata Steel from its oxygen suppliers has been put in progress by using the developed model. The learnings from this complex Oxygen flow network will be helpful to design the Nitrogen and Argon flow network with respect to cost optimization
