Statistical thinking principles have been the cornerstone of major improvement initiatives such as TQM and Six Sigma. “Variation” is central to statistical thinking and the ability to reason, identify, quantify, control, and reduce variation provide opportunities for quality improvement. It is imperative for organizations embarking on the Six Sigma journey to embed statistical thinking into their key business processes. A greater emphasis on statistical thinking promotes deeper learning about the context of the data and the process that produces the data. Hence, the need for appropriate techniques to model variation, handle uncertainties and the effective use of statistical methods makes it necessary to institute the statistical thinking implementation framework. This paper begins with an exposition of statistical thinking, followed by delineating the important aspects of Six Sigma, DFSS, design thinking and statistical engineering. Some perspectives on the enhancement and integration of statistical thinking, Six Sigma, design thinking and statistical education are provided. The key challenges for infusing statistical thinking in engineering education to transform students’ learning experience are outlined. Furthermore, interesting illustrations in various context are presented to demonstrate how statistical thinking and data analysis could enable one to gain more insights into a situation. Strategies for the realization of increased statistical literacy and the effective applications of statistical methodologies for quality improvement are discussed
