The goal of this research is to clarify the organizational relationships and management systems that are optimal for a bioventure to successfully perform research and development and grow. In the pharmaceutical industry, the research and development model is changing. The role of bioventures has become increasingly important. However, many bioventures and bioclusters are not successful. There is an important connection between research and development and an interorganizational relationship. For example, the cooperation inherent in an open network, which is characterized by a horizontal relationship between individual firms, is suitable for the IT industry. However, in the motor vehicle industry, a vertical, closed organizational relationship between individual firms is more suitable. This research used an empirical study to identify the most desirable interorganizational relationships and management styles for bioventures. A questionnaire was mailed to bioventures in Japan. We conclude that a bioventure should utilize an external, horizontal network to search customer needs. Conversely, it is important for a bioventure to build long-term interorganizational relationships with pharmaceutical manufacturers in the same way that parts suppliers in the motor vehicle industry build relationships with car manufacturers. There is a high degree of uncertainty in the field of pharmaceutical products development, and there is a necessity for long-term investment. An expansion of the role of a bioventure’s external relationship manager or an enhancement of the responsibilities of its product manager is also desirable.
