As they indicate what the cultural values are and what is accepted right or wrong in a specific society, the representations on TV news present an example for children, the youth and adults. However, during the historical process there had been major differences in the representation of women and men on TV. Until the 1980’s while only 20 percent of the characters seen on TV around the world were women, an increase was detected afterwards despite the male dominance (Erdogan, 2011: 17-20). The factor leading to this increase was women’s gaining currency with the feminist media studies (Celenk, 2002:230). The topics that women appear on TV are primarily social topics, art, crime and violence, and they hardly appear in politics where men mainly prevail (Erdogan, 2011: 25). In general, the roles attributed to women on TV are a good wife and a mother image. This situation results from the role given to women by society. The TV shows in which women frequently appear are thus placed according to women’s housework, their children’s school hours, their husband’s home-coming hours and women are qualified as housewives predominantly (Celenk, 2002: 235). However women’s representation on TV and their state in communal living are significant indicators of their development. There is an important relationship between the development level of a society and women’s role in economical and social life (Yumusak, 2009:5). Therefore all of these factors lead to women’s prototype and stereotype representation on TV. Women rarely take place in media with their occupation and skills. In this research in which the Turkish Radio and Television, TRT1, records of June 4 to 9th, 2012 are examined how women are represented on television news is searched. Their age, occupation, clothes, the location that they are found, the topics that they take place on the news, the reasons why they become news are examined and their visibility is discussed.
